Where Exceptional Saffron Begins

Herat is the heart of Afghanistan’s saffron industry, where crocus flowers are harvested by hand and their deep-red stigmas are separated with care.

We source Extra Super Negin saffron through trusted Afghan supply partners. The sample documented in our current independent laboratory report was assessed against ISO 3632 criteria and classified Category I before the saffron was prepared for sale in Australia.

What does Category I mean?

ISO 3632 assesses measurable saffron characteristics. The sample in our current independent report was classified Category I, with crocin 295.8, picrocrocin 114.2 and safranal 33.5. Silk Road Saffron itself is not an ISO-certified company.

Where is your saffron sourced?

Our saffron comes from Herat, Afghanistan. We work with trusted supply partners and growers, selecting long, deep-red Extra Super Negin threads for consistency, colour and aroma.

How do I know the saffron is pure?

Appearance and water tests can offer clues, but they cannot prove purity. Genuine threads release their golden colour gradually and retain their shape; independent laboratory testing provides stronger evidence.

How much should I use—and how do I prepare it?

For a dish serving two to four people, begin with a small pinch—around 15–20 threads. Gently crush and steep them in two tablespoons of warm, not boiling, water or milk for 15–20 minutes, then add both the liquid and threads.

How should saffron be stored?

Keep the jar firmly closed in a cool, dry and dark cupboard, away from steam, sunlight and heat. This helps preserve its colour, aroma and flavour.

Does the report cover every future batch?

No. The report documents the tested sample and should not be read as a permanent guarantee for every future shipment. We publish the evidence we currently hold and identify its limits.
