THE FOUNDER
Why I Built Silk Road Saffron
My name is Mujtaba Razmi. I was born in Afghanistan and worked in saffron quality, food safety and sourcing before building a new life in Australia.
My background includes specialist saffron quality and safety training in India involving Purdue University, Frontier Co-op and Rumi Spice. That experience taught me that premium saffron needs more than a beautiful origin story: it needs careful handling, transparent evidence and respect for the people behind it.
I founded Silk Road Saffron to connect Herat’s saffron heritage with Australian homes, chefs and businesses—and to show Afghanistan through skill, agriculture and pride, beyond the usual story of conflict.
HERAT, AFGHANISTAN
Where the Story Begins
Herat is one of Afghanistan’s principal saffron-growing regions. During the short autumn harvest, crocus flowers are gathered and their crimson stigmas are separated by hand—a precise process shaped by experience and timing.
We source through trusted Afghan supply partners and growers, selecting long, deep-red Extra Super Negin threads for consistency in colour, aroma and flavour.

WHY IT MATTERS
A Different Story of Afghanistan
Afghanistan is too often seen only through war and loss. Saffron reveals another reality: agricultural knowledge, craftsmanship and pride.
The saffron industry creates seasonal work across Afghan communities, including for women involved in harvesting and processing. Every purchase helps sustain demand for Afghan saffron and the skilled work behind it.
