Product & quality

Where does your saffron come from?

Our saffron is sourced from Herat, Afghanistan, through trusted Afghan supply partners and growers. It is imported into Australia and prepared for sale and dispatch in Sydney.

READ OUR STORY
What does Extra Super Negin mean?

Extra Super Negin describes the selected thread presentation: long, deep-red saffron threads with minimal yellow style. It is a trade description of appearance and selection, not an ISO laboratory category.

WHY OUR SAFFRON
What does ISO 3632 Category I mean?

ISO 3632 assesses measurable saffron characteristics associated with colour, flavour, aroma, moisture and physical purity. Our tested sample achieved Category I, with crocin 295.8, picrocrocin 114.2 and safranal 33.5 documented in the report.

Is Silk Road Saffron ISO certified?

No. Silk Road Saffron is not an ISO-certified company. An independent laboratory tested the saffron sample against ISO 3632 criteria and reported a Category I result. Those are different claims.

What are the ingredients?

The ingredient is 100% saffron (Crocus sativus) threads. The laboratory report recorded artificial colourants as absent and foreign matter at 0.01%.

Is the saffron certified organic?

No. We do not claim organic certification. Our quality claims are limited to the origin, thread presentation and independent laboratory results we can document.

02

Using & storing

How much saffron should I use?

A small pinch is usually enough for a home dish, but the right amount depends on the recipe, serving size and desired intensity. Start conservatively; you can add more infused saffron, but you cannot remove it once the flavour dominates.

How should I prepare saffron before cooking?

Gently crush the threads and steep them in a small amount of warm—not boiling—water or milk for about 15 to 20 minutes. Add both the liquid and threads to the dish. This helps distribute the colour, aroma and flavour evenly.

How should I store saffron?

Keep the jar tightly closed in a cool, dry and dark place, away from steam, direct sunlight and strong odours. Do not refrigerate it; repeated temperature changes can introduce condensation.

Why do you sell whole threads instead of powder?

Whole threads let you inspect the product’s appearance and preserve its character until use. Powder is harder for a customer to assess visually and loses aroma more quickly once exposed to air.
