Why Saffron Is Called the King of Spices

Saffron has carried the “King of Spices” nickname for generations. The reason is practical: producing whole saffron threads requires a short harvest window, delicate flowers and a large amount of careful handwork.

Three threads from each flower

Each Crocus sativus flower contains three red stigmas. Those stigmas are separated from the flower and dried to become the saffron used in cooking. Because the usable part of each flower is so small, even a modest jar represents many flowers and repeated manual handling.

Why whole threads matter

Whole threads let a buyer inspect the product’s form and colour. Powder is harder to assess visually and exposes more surface area to air. We sell selected Extra Super Negin threads: a trade description for long, deep-red thread presentation with minimal yellow style.

What saffron brings to food

Prepared properly, saffron releases colour gradually and contributes a distinctive aroma and layered flavour. It is used across rice dishes, broths, tea, milk drinks, custards, baking and desserts. A small amount is usually enough.

How to judge a saffron seller

  • Look for a specific origin rather than a vague “premium” claim.
  • Choose whole threads if you want to inspect the product yourself.
  • Check whether laboratory language distinguishes the tested sample from the business itself.
  • Read the actual report rather than relying on badges or invented grades.
