Where Exceptional Saffron Begins

Herat is the heart of Afghanistan’s saffron industry, where crocus flowers are harvested by hand and their deep-red stigmas are separated with care.

Saffron also creates valuable seasonal work across Afghan communities, including for women involved in harvesting and processing. We source Extra Super Negin saffron through trusted Afghan supply partners, with current laboratory evidence available for customers to inspect.

THE ESSENTIALS

Cooking with saffron

Start with a small pinch. Bloom it gently, then add both the threads and the infusion.

How much should I use—and how do I prepare it?

Start with a small pinch, gently crush the threads, and steep in a little warm water, milk or broth for 10–15 minutes. Add the threads and liquid to your dish. Adjust the next batch to your recipe and taste.

How should saffron be stored?

Keep the jar firmly closed in a cool, dry and dark cupboard, away from steam, sunlight and heat. This helps preserve its colour, aroma and flavour.

What does Category I mean?

ISO 3632 assesses measurable saffron characteristics. The sample in our current independent report was classified Category I, with crocin 295.8, picrocrocin 114.2 and safranal 33.5. Silk Road Saffron itself is not an ISO-certified company.
